Display and Processor

Like most other smartphone wars that we’ve been having here at GadgetsToUse, this one too doesn’t leave much to you while being cut-throat. Both phones, the G700 and the Canvas 4 come with a 5 inch screen with a 1280 x 720p HD resolution, accounting for a pixel density of 294ppi. What’s more is that both devices use the same IPS LCD technology on their panels, meaning that the picture quality will more or less be identical. We have had our time with the Canvas 4 and we liked the display quality, but we’re sure Huawei won’t be too far off, so you can’t pick one on the basis of display. Going under the hood, we see 1.2GHz quad core processors on either device. The MT6589 which is the one used on the devices has been in the news for long now, and the processor is a known performer. Games, productivity apps, multimedia; the processor will invariably handle most of what you throw at it without showing signs of wear. However, the Canvas 4 features 1GB of RAM whereas the G700 does 2GB, which means that the G700 is the obvious choice here. You can expect the G700 to be faster in loading apps and much smoother while multitasking.

Camera and Memory

We are using to seeing high resolution cameras on domestic and Chinese phones, and neither disappoints. The Canvas 4 comes with a very decent 13MP unit with LED flash on the front, while the G700 comes with an 8MP again with LED flash, which means Canvas 4 is the one you should go for if you have even the smallest shutterbug in you. On the front, the Canvas 4 again beats the G700 with a 5MP unit as compared to a 1.3MP one on the G700. Clearly, the Canvas 4 reigns with the better imaging hardware. The Canvas 4 again shows authority with 16GB of on-board ROM along with a microSD slot for further expansion, upto 64GB. On the other hand, the G700 features 8GB on-board, with expansion capabilities limited to 32GB. This means, the Canvas 4 is your device if you are into multimedia.

Battery and Features

Neither of the two devices comes with a good enough battery by 2013 standards. The Canvas 4 features a 2000mAh unit, while the G700 comes with a slightly larger 2150mAh one. With the extra 150mAh, you can expect a good few hours of standby, and maybe up to an hour of usage. However, we don’t think that the extra 150mAh is worth giving up other benefits of the Canvas 4. The Canvas 4 comes with a few features like blow to unlock, shake to unlock, etc. which we hardly see anyone using. On the other hand, the G700 does no such tricks.

Conclusion

Given the growing popularity of Micromax and their increasing after-sales service base, we would like to believe that the Canvas 4 is the better device of the two. Taking nothing away from Huawei, we feel that Indian citizens will have a sense of relation and trust with Micromax. Also, the Canvas 4 comes with better imaging hardware, better memory features which backs our argument. You will have to give up on extra 1GB of RAM and the extra 150mAh battery, however.
